Dr Norman Dandy
Senior Research Fellow in Sustainable Land Use
–
Overview
I am an environmental social scientist and project leader, and have had roles within government research and the charity sector, as well as in higher education. My work focuses on forests and forest land – in particular the political, ethical, and cultural relationships with land and other forest species that influence our practices and approaches to management.
I have completed research on a number of inter-related subjects including wildlife management, forest health & biosecurity, woodland creation, biomass energy (woodfuel), forest recreation, flood management, the forestry workforce, and sustainability behaviours. I also have an interest in novel qualitative research methodologies, particularly image-based techniques. My research is usually undertaken in policy and practice rich environments, requiring an applied perspective and resulting in close links with a wide range of stakeholders.
I joined Bangor University in 2018 where I am Director of the Sir William Roberts Centre for Sustainable Land Use. The Centre aims to provide a framework and forum for staff and students at the university to work together and with partners to explore cross-cutting aspects of sustainability relating to land.
I am Deputy Editor of Environmental Values journal.

Research Interests
I am interested in the everyday political, ethical, and cultural relationships with land and other species that influence our practices and approaches to management – particularly in relation to trees, woodlands and forest landscapes. These interests currently coalesce around three themes: (i) collaborative and adaptive approaches to land management, (ii) forest health, resilience and biosecurity and (iii) human dimensions of forest wildlife. These subject areas lead me to engage closely with core geographical, political and ethical areas such as participation, deliberation, place, stake, practice, and human/non-human relations.
At Bangor University I am Director of the Sir William Roberts Centre for Sustainable Land Use which provides a framework for staff and students at the university to work together and with partners to explore cross-cutting aspects of sustainability relating to land.
