Manon wins 'excellence in Employability' Award

Many congratulations to Manon Elwyn Hughes, a third-year student at the School of Welsh, for being one of eight students across Bangor University to win a BEA Excellence Award, for having taken positive steps to improve their employment prospects.

During her three years at the School of Welsh, Manon acted both as Peer-Guide and Course Representative, and also formed part of the editorial team of Y Llef, BU’s Welsh-language student newspaper, becoming its editor-in-chief during her final year. In addition, Manon won the Norah Isaac Prize, awarded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, for the best nationwide performance in its Welsh-language Skills Certificate in 2014. She did several days’ work experience at Canolfan Bedwyr which led to further employment at the centre during her summer vacation, and she has also been volunteering at Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias, based at Galeri in Caernarfon, for several years.

Professor Angharad Price, Employability Representative at the School of Welsh, said: ‘We are grateful to Manon for all that she has contributed to the School and are delighted with her success. She has developed a wide range of skills during the course of her degree in Welsh, whilst maintaining a high standard of academic work.’

Manon hopes to return to the School to complete a Masters degree in Welsh literature in 2015-16.

The awards were given out at an event held at Bangor University in early May 2015, which was attended by staff, students and employers.

Chris Little, Head of the Careers and Employability Service, said: ‘Once again the BEA Employability Celebration has been a resounding success, showcasing some of Bangor University’s best talent. In an increasingly competitive global labour market Bangor University through the BEA has shown that it is encouraging and empowering students to succeed in the job market and their future careers. It was also great to see many employers in attendance and lending their support to the BEA and the students who engage with the award.’
