Information for International students

The following types of support are indicative of the services we may be able to provide:

  • Provide information about disability, specific learning difference or mental health issues, and the services and support which might be available.

  • Advise on strategies to make studying and everyday tasks more manageable.

  • Help with arranging examination requirements, for example: extra time.

  • Arrange for additional library provision, for example: extended library loans.

  • Draw up a Personal Learning Support Plan to make sure your School is aware of your individual requirements.

  • Work closely with your School’s Disability Tutor.

  • Keep in touch through meetings, email and newsletters.

  • Loan equipment, for example: digital recorder (where available).

  • Arrange access to Assistive Technology Rooms with computers, and assistive technology software, for example screen magnification and screen reader.

  • Familiarisation / mobility training.

We can also liaise with Halls for an en-suite bathroom and/or internet connection, subject to the usual fees and the provision of relevant medical evidence.   A number of rooms have been adapted for disabled students within some residences.

The University has a small fund to pay for additional disability support costs for students who are not eligible for UK Disabled Students' Allowances.  To apply, you will need to meet with an adviser, provide evidence of disability and undergo a study needs assessment, which may involve your Academic School / department.

Confidentiality: Discussions are in confidence and information will only be shared on a 'need to know' basis within the University, when appropriate, and with your permission.

We are located on the lower ground floor, Rathbone.  Our offices are open between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.

There are 2 entrances:  [Number 70]

  1. Using the Lift: go through the automatic glass door at the far left-hand side of Rathbone and follow the corridor to the lift.  We are on floor “-1” (the lower ground floor).  Out of the lift, follow the corridor through the waiting room and double doors to reception.

  2. Follow the footpath at the side of the automatic glass door at the far left-hand side of Rathbone to Disability Services and down the steps and around the building.  This takes you to further steps / ramp up to the main entrance.

Alternatively you can access entrance 2 through the gates off Love Lane and use the ramp, thereby avoiding steps. (There is a steep incline to Love Lane).
