Study Skills Study Groups
“Studying for a degree is never easy and it can lead to feelings of isolation and to a lack of motivation.” To help counter this and to build a sense of community, Study Skills runs online study groups. The groups are facilitated by the Team’s Peer Writing Mentor.
Become part of a study community in order to discuss study challenges, to set goals, to share ideas, and to build in blocks of time in order to make progress towards your academic goals.
How do the groups work?
They start with discussion and individual goal setting. This is followed by a combination of focused work segments and check-in moments during which you can bounce ideas off of the other people in your group and cheer one another on. The tasks you work on during timed work segments are yours, individually, to choose – whether that is writing an assignment, developing a study schedule, reading, writing up lecture notes, or a wealth of other things.
Typically, meetings will follow this pattern:
- 20 minutes initial introductions, discussion, and goal setting
- 20 minutes focused work (mics off, camera off)
- 10 minutes check-in (if needed – the group facilitator will be available regardless)
- 20 minutes focused work (mics off, camera off)
- 20 minutes final check-in / planning round up
The groups are open to students at all levels of study and across all academic disciplines.
Where and when do the groups meet?
The groups meet fortnightly over Microsoft Teams, with each meeting lasting for 90 minutes.
The next meeting will be in the week starting on 17th October 2022..
