Overview
This module is designed to provide an in-depth exploration of the major philosophical developments and thinkers in the Western intellectual tradition. This course offers a comprehensive journey through the rich tapestry of Western philosophy, examining the key ideas, debates, and movements that have shaped the discipline from its origins in ancient Greece to contemporary times. By immersing themselves in the history of philosophy, students will gain a profound understanding of the intellectual landscape that continues to influence contemporary thought.
Emphasis will be placed on critical analysis, research skills, and the development of advanced philosophical inquiry. Through close readings of primary texts and engagement with secondary sources, students will cultivate the ability to critically evaluate philosophical arguments, trace the historical contexts in which ideas emerged, and discern the ongoing relevance and impact of philosophical theories on modern-day issues.
The course will adopt a thematic approach, examining various philosophical themes and problems that have preoccupied Western philosophers throughout history. Students may choose to explore the evolution of metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and other branches of philosophical inquiry.
