English Language Requirements

Entry onto undergraduate courses, postgraduate taught courses and postgraduate research course requires a minimum English language score of IELTS 6.0 (with no individual score lower than 5.5) however some undergraduate and postgraduate programmes require higher scores. Please refer to the table and links below which will provide you with all the necessary information.

The school will accept IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5 subject to students completing a 12 week pre-sessional course with ELCOS

Ocean Sciences (MSc Marine Environmental Protection / MSc Marine Biology)

6.5 score lower than 6.0

Psychology

At least 6.5 with no individual score lower than 6.0 and a writing score of 6.5. MRes applicants should have an IELTS of at least 7.0

Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences

6.5 with no individual score lower than 6.0

Healthcare Sciences

Non-Clinical Programmes, 6.5 with no individual score lower than 6.0

Research Programmes, 7.0 with no individual score lower than 7.0

Theology and Religious Studies

6.5 with no individual score lower than 6.0

Students who have undertaken 2 years of education entirely through the medium of English directly prior to entry to Bangor University, will not be required to submit an English Language test certificate. For further information, please contact the International Admissions Office by email at international@bangor.ac.uk or by telephone on +44 (0) 1248 382028.

Students can take IETLS from the British Council.

Other Language Level Tests

TOEFL IBT

Bangor University recognises the TOEFL IBT test. Our minimum TOEFLT IBT entry requirement is an overall score of 75, with minimum scores of Listening - 17, Reading - 18, Speaking - 20 and Writing - 18. Download the table of comparison between TOEFL and IELTS.

Pearson PTE Academic

Bangor University recognises the PTE Academic tests as meeting our English language requirements for certain courses. Pearson’s new computer-based academic test can be used to demonstrate your English language proficiency and is accepted by the UK Border Agency for visa applications.

Different courses may have different language requirements and these are normally expressed as 'IELTS' scores. Listed below are some of the IELTS requirements that you may see against certain courses, together with the Pearson Academic PTE equivalents.

The score in brackets is the minimum score for the communicative skills element of the Pearson test.

* Ielts 4.5 = PTE 35 (30) onto 30 week pre-sessional
* Ielts 5.5 = PTE 43 (42) onto 12 week pre-sessional
