Ann McLaren was born in High Wycombe , Buckinghamshire. She trained as a state registered nurse in 1960 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, working as a staff nurse in the ENT theatre at that hospital until 1965. From 1982 until 1986 she worked as a night sister at Chichester Hospital, West Sussex .

She studied Law at the Central London Polytechnic, now The University of Westminster, gaining an LL.B (Hons) in 1990. She gained an MA in Criminal Justice from the University of Reading, Berkshire, in 1993. She also obtained a City and Guilds Teaching Adults in Further Education Certificate in the same year. She has lectured in Criminology and Policing at the University of Portsmouth and Southampton Institute from 1990 until 2000. Since 2000 she has held the post of teaching assistant at Bangor University in the Criminology and Law departments. She was appointed a magistrate in 1977, sitting on the Portsmouth Bench until 2000 and is now sitting as a magistrate on the Conwy bench, Llandudno.
