Finding Bangor

Bangor is close to the fast North Wales Expressway (A55) linking into the UK and European motorway networks. As long as you are the passenger you can also enjoy some wonderful scenery with views of the mountains and the sea passing the Great Orme at Llandudno, Conway Harbour, and the islands of Anglesey.

By Road
In most cases, the fastest route to Bangor is the A55 expressway along the North Wales coast.

  • If you are travelling from the South/West of England from the M6, follow the M54 signs towards Shrewsbury, Wrexham and Chester to the A55 to Bangor.
  • If you are travelling from the North, you need to take the M56 and then the A55 to Bangor.
  • From West Wales, you should follow the A487 to Aberystwyth, and then via Dolgellau, Porthmadog and Caernarfon to Bangor.
  • From South Wales the best route is via Hereford, Leominster and Shrewsbury, then follow Wrexham and Chester signs to the A55 to Bangor.

By Boat

If you are arriving at Holyhead, there is a rail link to Bangor (journey time about 30 minutes). Return fare approximately £12. For more ferry information, visit travel-wire.com, the Bangor University Website also has information about travelling from Ireland.

By Air
Bangor is only 90 minutes by car from Manchester International Airport. If you are arriving at Manchester Airport, there are bus and rail links to Bangor (journey time about 3 hours) running hourly approximately on the hour. Please check the National Rail web site for details. The single fare is approximately £27, saver return fare approximately £30 (but check website for restrictions at peak periods).

By Train
Bangor Station is on the mainline (Irish Mail) with fast direct links to London, Cardiff and Crewe (and the rest of the mainline network). For rail information, Railtrack have a website and a train information phone line 0845 7 48 49 50.

Main Reception
The main reception desk is in the Brigantia Building, Penrallt Road, just off College Road in Upper Bangor. Parking is restricted so if you are coming by car, please contact the reception on 01248 38 2211 to arrange parking.

Open Days
Just down from the Brigantia Building is the Wheldon Building where we host our Open Days. If you are coming for an Open Day then please go straight to the Wheldon Building. This is nearer to the city centre where most of the student activity is located.
