Two of Wales’ most eminent novelists visited the School of Welsh in March to discuss their work. On March 15 Lloyd Jones came to give a talk about his remarkable apocalyptic novel, Y Dŵr, a set-text on the first-year module, ‘Llenyddiaeth Gyfoes’. It was particularly interesting to hear Lloyd Jones speak of the relationship between his work in English and Welsh. He also talked about his forthcoming novel, entitled Y Daith, which will be published by Y Lolfa later this year.
Two days later, students from the School of Welsh gathered once again to listen to a talk by Wiliam Owen Roberts. Y Pla is one of the set-texts on the module ‘Rhyddid y Nofel’, but after outlining the influences on that novel, he went on to discuss his later works. Wiliam Owen Roberts is also about to complete a new novel. Paris will form a sequel to Petrograd, the novel which won him the Book of the Year award in 2009.
‘It is a privilege to have two important novelists come and talk to us about their work,’ said Dr Angharad Price who lectures on the novel at the School of Welsh. ‘It makes the literature come alive. I am very grateful to Lloyd and Wil for visiting us.’
