Overview of Postgraduate Programmes in Mindfulness
The Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (School of Psychology, Bangor University) offers two part-time courses - the MSc/MA in Mindfulness-Based Approaches (MBAs) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching Mindfulness-Based Courses (TMBCs). Both of these courses are designed for professionals and provide students with both experiential learning and theoretical knowledge in mindfulness-based approaches, mainly as taught through the courses of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The programmes give a foundation for professional practice, research and teaching in the contemporary uses of mindfulness meditation.
The Master's in MBAs programme consists of four (30 credits each) taught modules and a research dissertation (60 credits). The Postgraduate Diploma in TMBCs includes four modules without the research thesis. Most of the taught modules are delivered over five weekends across the academic year (two modules are available in longer residential blocks). Module fees vary, but the basic fee for each weekend module will be £650 in 2012/13, with some extra costs of around £200/module (residential modules are more expensive). The module format suits both local students and those travelling from further afield, and together with online and individual tutorials and supervision, ensures a supportive learning situation. For the weekend teaching days, students stay in Bangor, North Wales – on the edge of Snowdonia – and are able to meet informally with each other around the formal sessions. A strong community of learning and friendship often develops.
Students on the MA/MSc in Mindfulness-Based Approaches can exit their programme early with a Postgraduate Certificate (after completing two modules in 1 or 2 years) or a Postgraduate Diploma (after completing four modules in 2 to 4 years). The MSc/MA is awarded when a thesis has been successfully completed in addition to four modules; the full Master's takes 3 to 5 years. Students on the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching Mindfulness-Based Courses can exit their programme early with a Postgraduate Certificate.
