The School of Welsh and Translators’ House Wales

Image of Mareike Kruegel and Dr Mererid puw DaviesThe School of Welsh recently collaborated with Translators’ House Wales, along with Wales Literature Exchange, in arranging a visit by the German author, Mareike Kruegel. She is the second author-translator to have a residency at the National Writing Centre at Ty Newydd under the auspices of the European HALMA network. She was accompanied by the translator, poet and scholar Dr Mererid Puw Davies of the Department of German, UCL, who was commissioned to translate Mareike’s work into Welsh. Readings were made from Mareike’s most recent novel, Die Tochter Meines Vaters (‘My Father’s Daughter’), followed by translations into Welsh, and the event came to a conclusion with a discussion by the two writers on the novelist’s work, and on the ramifications of translating between Welsh and German.
