Ifan Morgan Jones wins Eisteddfod literary award!

ifan morgan jonesFor the third time in four years, a postgraduate student of Bangor University’s School of Welsh has won the Daniel Owen Award at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Ifan Morgan Jones, who is deputy editor of the weekly magazine, Golwg, scooped  the Eisteddfod prize for his first novel, Igam Ogam.

Ifan had originally presented the work in his folio for his Creative Writing MA at Bangor University, a course which he studied part time and graduated from with a Distinction.

In 2006, a Creative Studies PhD student, Gwen Pritchard Jones was awarded the prize for her historical novel Dygwyl Eneidiau, and in 2005 Sian Eirian Rees a Creative Studies MA student won the award for her novel, I Fyd Sydd Well.

As he warmly congratulated Ifan on his achievement, Professor Gerwyn Williams, Head of the Schoool of Welsh said, “This is testament to the excellence of our MA and PhD teaching in the field of creative studies.  Bangor University’s School of Welsh is a nurturing ground for Wales’ new novelists!”

Another connection with the University is the fact that Ifan’s mother, Dr Sylvia Prys Jones, to whom he dedicated the novel, is the head of the University’s translation unit.
