Crowning Lleucu.
Heartfelt congratulations to Lleucu Fflur Hughes for winning the National Urdd Eisteddfod Crown!
A former student of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Lleucu graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Welsh with Creative Writing in 2007. She then followed a Creative Writing MA at Bangor. Since the beginning of the year, she has been working as a reporter for the weekly paper Y Cymro.
Said Prof Gerwyn Wiliams, Head of the School of Welsh and director of the MA Creative Writing course:
"We're delight with Lleucu's success. It was a pleasure seeing her creative talents extend and develop during her time at Bangor. Her winning short novel is a piece of work located clearly in the contemporary Wales of Cardiff Bay and Caernarfon's Victoria Dock. It also highlights her ability to write tragi-comedy. I'm sure she'll be very popular among young and old readers alike!
"Here's further proof of the success of the MA Creative Writing at the School of Welsh - at last year's National Eisteddfod in Cardiff, Ifan Morgan Jones won the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize with a novel he presented as part of his portfolio of work."
Another School of Welsh student enjoying a busy week was Manon Wyn Williams, who is also currently following the Creative Writing MA. Having won the Bryn Terfel Scholarship in 2007, she was seen performing in a special concert to celebrate ten years of the Scholarship on the Millennium Centre stage at the beginning of the Urdd Eisteddfod week. The same year, in 2007, Manon won the Urdd's Drama Medal.
