Non wins main University prize
Non Meleri Hughes of Bryn Eryl, Rhuthin has been congratulated, not only for gaining a First Class Honours degree at Bangor University but also for scooping the Dr John Roberts Jones Welsh Student’s Award, one of three main prizes awarded at the University each year. Non was awarded the Prize of £1,000 by the University’s Vice-Chancellor. Professor Merfyn Jones, during the degree ceremony.
Twenty one year old Non, of Bryn Eryl, Ruthin, is a former pupil of Ysgol Bryn Hyfryd. Having taken A levels in Welsh, History and Physical Education, Non chose a course which would combine two of these subjects. She was able to find that flexibility at Bangor – at Schools which are among the best in the UK for Welsh and Sports Science respectively.
“Everyone is friendly at Bangor, the lecturers are excellent and the social life is fantastic,” says Non who lived at the Welsh Hall, Neuadd John Morris Jones throughout her time at University.
Non intends to stay on at Bangor to study an MA at the School of Welsh. She will be studying the contemporary Welsh novel and the novels of William Owen Roberts in particular. The prize will go towards financing the MA.
Said Head of the School of Welsh, Prof Peredur Lynch: “We are delighted by Non’s achievement. She really has been a first class student, and her achievement is also testament to the academic care offered at the School of Welsh and the University’s other academic departments.”
