At the initiative of the Rhys Davies Trust, and with additional funding from the Welsh Academy and Bangor University, a plaque to commemorate R. S. Thomas (1913–2000) has been erected near the entrance to the Main Arts Library. As well as commemorating R. S. Thomas’s achievements as a poet, the plaque notes that he was, from 1932 to 1935, a student at Bangor, where he read Classics.
The plaque was officially unveiled by Gwydion Thomas, the poet’s son, on Saturday 14 June 2008. To mark the occasion, there will be an exhibition in the Library during June and July of some of the material in the R.S. Thomas Study Centre's collection.
The R.S. Thomas Study Centre, which was opened by Thomas himself in April 2000 and of which Dr Jason Walford Davies of the School of Welsh is Co-Director, is recognized internationally as the main centre for academic research on the poet. The Centre houses a comprehensive archive of publications and manuscript material relating to Thomas's work.
