Set for Success - Bangor student named UK’s top translator

Dafydd FraylingA Bangor student has been picked from hundreds of applicants across the country to be named as the UK’s most accomplished student translator.

Dafydd Frayling, who is currently studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Translation at Aberystwyth and Bangor universities, beat the competition to be crowned the overall winner in a national student translation contest.

In search of the best new talent in translation, the contest was held by Swansea-based Veritas Language Solutions, one of the UK’s leading translation companies. The competition was split into separate categories for students with talent in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Welsh, Russian and Polish. Dafydd beat some stiff competition to be named as the winner thanks to his remarkable translating abilities in the Welsh language.

Dafydd who originally studied in Aberystwyth for an undergraduate degree in Welsh says he is ‘pleased and proud’ to be crowned as the overall winner of the competition. Dafydd’s success in the competition highlights the ability of the Welsh speaking students in Wales today and the valuable talent they have to offer the world of business and beyond. It is also a testament to the language departments at both Aberystwyth and Bangor that one of their students managed to beat some very talented competition from top universities across the UK.

The standard of entries was incredibly high and Dafydd’s work had to go through a rigorous selection process but in the end he came out on top and was described as ‘unequalled’ by the Directors of Veritas, Rachel Bryan and Sharon Stephens, who judged the competition.

As the winner Dafydd receives not only a night for two at a London hotel, but also the opportunity of a coveted internship with the company. This will be designed to give him a helping hand onto the first step of his translation career as well as giving him insight into the business of translation and providing him with an impressive experience for his CV.

Dafydd is now invited to attend a prize giving ceremony at the Veritas Head Offices. Present also will be the winners of the individual language categories from Durham, York, Liverpool, Northumbria and the University of East Anglia.
