Join Raluca Radulescu, Professor of Medieval Literature, for this FREE online Taster Session.
How can medieval literature, from so long ago, anchored in a different society and political context, still speak to us? Why do leading contemporary authors like Poet Laureate Simon Armitage still undertake translations of such old texts for a modern audience? This session looks at the appeal of such older literature and the strategies employed by both medieval authors and modern translators to engage with topical issues, then and now, in working with personal and national identity, local pride in community and customs, and the importance of the relationship with the land. It considers both modern translations of the poem and a recent film adaptation in order to highlight the importance of our continued study of early literature.
