Qualifications

  • PhD: Effect of climate change on decomposition in forest ecosystems. Lancaster Univ.
    1990–1995
  • BSc: BSc Agriculture and Environmental Science. University of Newcastle upon Tyne. 2:i.
    1984–1987

Research Interests

My interests are in the management of nutrients in livestock manures, other organic resources and fertilisers to optimise nutrient utilisation whilst minimising impacts on water and air quality. This includes; quantifying and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the risk of transfers of pollutants to watercourses, and understanding the secondary impacts of mitigating diffuse agricultural pollution. As well as publishing refereed scientific papers, I also contribute to policy and practice.

    Description

Climate change, trade policies and environmental regulations will have a profound effect on rural livelihoods in Costa Rica. The SusCoRiDa project team will work with the appropriate stakeholders to evaluate, and ultimately recommend, dairy development pathways in Costa Rica, based on three main pillars: improving livelihoods and rural incomes; reducing greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses; adapting and building resilience to climate change. The aim is to improve competitiveness in the Costa Rican dairy sector, whilst safeguarding and enhancing the rural environment by promoting a shift towards a low carbon and climate-resilient economy.

The SusCoRiDa project is funded via BBSRC from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF)

    01/09/2015 – 01/08/2019 (Finished)

    Description

The overarching aims of the project are to gain an improved understanding of the spatial and temporal interactions between sheep grazing behaviour, forage selection, urine composition and edaphic factors to increase the accuracy of direct N2O emission estimates from extensive upland systems. This will be undertaken using a range of approaches including equipping sheep with GPS and accelerometer tags, analysing urine and vegetation composition, spatially mapping soil and landscape properties which may influence N2O emissions, laboratory and field trials to quantify direct N2O emissions from sheep urine, and data integration and modelling of upland N2O emissions at the pasture scale.

The research is mostly being undertaken at Henfaes Research Centre, where a semi-improved area of enclosed hill land situated approximately 300 m above sea level is the area of study for the first grazing season. The second grazing season will take place within the Snowdonia National Park on an unimproved area situated approximately 850 m above sea level. To find out more about the approaches being undertaken follow the ‘Our Research’ link.
