I am doing a research masters project focusing on the effects of hybridsation and polyploidy on Senecio microbiome. The research will focus on the fungal and bacterial species present in the root microbiome of the plant.

The key components of this project are the effects of hybridisation on the microbiome assembly looking at the effects of odd ploidy on microbe recruitment. Followed by subsequent doubling of the chromosomes to reinstall and even ploidy and how this may further change the microbiome constitution.

  I will be attending WEEN 2026 alongside being part of this years committee, my role on the committee is venue liaison. My tasks include venue arrangements both for hosting the conference including the poster sessions and personal talks as well as organising the accommodation for attendees providing a smooth and issue free experiance for the attendees. Other tasks include searching for sponsors and funding for the conference as well as planning the social aspects of the conference.

  I attended the WEEN conference where I presented a poster on the topic of my research project which included a short talk with the academics attending the conference.

• Summer lab work/shadowing

  I spend 6-8 weeks helping, learning, and shadowing two PhD students during the summer of my second year in order to obtain a wider range of knowledge and obtain more laboratory experience. I worked and shadowed two PhD researchers one investigating neurone degradation in a drosophila lab, the second was investigating the effects of reforesting on the biodiversity levels within man made forests.
