Overview

I trained as a social gerontologist at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I moved to the UK in 1990 and have worked in the NHS as a clinical psychologist with older people both in England and Wales until 2021.

I worked with older people who experienced mental health difficulties and thier families, in their home or inpatient setting. I conducted neuropsychological asssesment and shared diagnoses of cognitive changes and dementia, and offered post diagnostic psychological intervention to the person and their support system. Offering training and guidance for care home staff would enable them to continue providing personcentred care to residents whose behaviours were experienced as challenging.

Since 2002, I have been working at the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme. I am the Recruitment and Selection Director, and lead on the selection process and our engagement with candidates. I regularly supervise trainees' large scale research projects. I teach and am the training coordinator to several trainees.

Research Interests

My research interests are varied, and related to ageing, end of life decisions. Working with trainee colleagues, we have explored the position and experiences of transgender people, clinical psychologist, and professional issues. I enjoy using qualitative research methods and especially Foucauldian Discourse Analysis. They offer different and deeper insights, on which further quantitative research can be build.
