Overview

Dr Stuart Beattie is a Reader in Performance Psychology. My main research and teaching interest lies in understanding processes that underpin performing to high standards under difficult circumstances. My research supervision revolves around resilience, mental toughness, confidence, stress and performance, personality, and psychophysiological responses to pressure. However, although I do research and publish in sport psychology journals, I also publish research from the military domain, youth justice service, and education settings.

From an applied perspective, I am part of the Institute for the Psychology of Elite Performance (IPEP) which is formed mainly from the main sport/performance psychology staff in the Sport and Exercise Science department. As part of this group, I have worked with the RAF, England and Wales Cricket, Manchester City, and have presented applied workshops across Europe and as far afield as Saudi Arabia.

A number of years ago I created our distance learning MSc degree in Performance Psychology (that I also teach on). Over the past 5 years I have been very fortunate to work with a range of students from around the world who have studied with us. It’s a great pleasure to see how our students from backgrounds such as Opera, Ballet, Music, NHS, Armed Forces, Business, Sport, Education (to name a few disciplines), successfully apply what we have taught them on this degree in their own domains. Supervising these students on their research projects/dissertations is a great honour indeed.

Additional Contact Information

I am Reader in Performance Psychology. I am currently the Director for our Distance Learning Degree in Performance Psychology that I also validated.
