I have a broad range of research interests that usually sit on the interface between agriculture and the environment. These include areas around organic resources (slurries, manures, etc.), pathogens, antibiotic resistance, and soils. Having worked on a number of large interdisciplinary projects, I have also developed a considerable interest in the ongoing discussions around land use (sustainable intensification, delivery of public goods, etc.).

I sit on a number of external committees and frequently engage with industry.

Postgraduate Project Opportunities

I am interested in many areas at the interface between agriculture and the environment. These include, but are not limited to:

  • soil and nutrient management
  • sustainable intensification of livestock systems
  • land use and the delivery of ecosystem services
  • antibiotic resistance

Please contact me by all means to discuss any ideas.

Expert panel discussion on heat recovery potential of leisure centres

Climate change poses significant challenges and the global community is not on track to meet sustainable development targets or the Paris Agreement to mitigate climate change. The Covid-19 pandemic and necessary government measures to curb the spread of the virus has put climate action on hold and shut down economies. The need for improved ventilation as an important mitigating factor against the risk of Covid-19 transmission has additional implications for costs and emissions for businesses.

Leisure centres, as large users of water and energy, account for significant emissions and operational costs. However, there is scope for very significant reductions in water and water-related energy demands and associated emissions and costs without impacting service quality and delivery. These reductions can be a promising response to the current challenges of climate change and post-Covid-19 economic recovery.

To discuss energy demands in leisure centres and the important contributions to emissions and cost reductions that can be made through heat recovery, the Dŵr Uisce project (https://www.dwr-uisce.eu/) is hosting an expert panel discussion on heat recovery as one of the several ways these reductions can be made.

The panellists will be discussing a range of questions and some of the current opportunities, challenges, and risks associated with installing heat recovery in leisure centres in order to promote resource conversation and ideas on how leisure centres can take climate action and also save costs and improve environmental footprint in the process.

Bydd y prosiect Hydro-BPT yn hybu cynaliadwyedd y diwydiant cyflenwi dŵr yn Iwerddon a Chymru drwy fanteisio ar y potensial ar gyfer adfer ynni sy'n bodoli yn y diwydiant dŵr. Nod y prosiect yw cyflwyno'r diwydiannau cyflenwi dŵr ac ynni dŵr yn ardal draws-ffiniol Iwerddon Cymru gyda fframwaith clir o ble i greu gweithgarwch economaidd a gwella cynaliadwyedd cyflenwad dŵr. Mae'r prosiect Hydro-BPT yn cael ei ariannu'n rhannol gan Gronfa Datblygu Rhanbarthol Ewrop drwy Raglen Iwerddon Cymru (INTERREG 4A).

    ************

Hydro-BPT will advance the sustainability of the process of water supply in Ireland and Wales by exploiting the potential for energy recovery that exists in the water industry. The aim of the project is to present the water supply and hydropower industries in the Ireland Wales cross-border area with a clear framework from which to create economic activity and improve water supply sustainability. The Hydro-BPT project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales Programme (INTERREG 4A).
