View Dr Mitesh Patel’s profile on the Bangor Research Portal

Overview

Mitesh joined the North Wales Medical School at Bangor University in December 2024.

He has a PhD from Lund University, Sweden, where he was part of the ENT department at Lund Hospital conducting research into human movement disorders and their effects on postural control, motor learning and eye movements.

He remained at Lund University as a post-doctoral researcher in the same department before taking a post-doctoral position at Imperial College London, Charing Cross Hospital, in the neuro-otology unit in the division of Brain Sciences.

At Charing Cross Hospital, Mitesh was part of the clinical investigative team in the neuro-otology unit, acute stroke team and audiology unit in addition to his scientific and clinically-based research into peripheral vestibular disorders and movement disorders. His focus was on elucidating factors of recovery in clinical populations, new treatment for Meniere's disease and on the brain mechanisms of spatial orientation.

Teaching and Supervision

Mitesh teaches across courses in the North Wales Medical School in medical sciences. He is happy to take research students.

Mitesh is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is a committed educator and commended by students for his use of innovative techniques, enthusiasm, clarity and clinical translation. His approach to optimising the learning experience is to engage students through themed learning. For example, a topic can be taught in a lecture, discussed through problem-based learning, revised through a scenario-based practical and assessed formatively through group discussion, poll-based SBAs and practical skills assessment.

Research Interests

Mitesh has published papers in clinical and basic sensorimotor neuroscience (including papers in the Lancet, Journal of Neurology, Neurolosurgery and Psychiatry, Neurology). Mitesh has managed and conducted clinical trials from application, MHRA approval, data collection through to publication.

Mitesh's research interests are in elucidating predictors of outcome in neurological disease, in doing so finding out the brain regions responsible for symptoms, and the vestibular control of posture. Mitesh uses techniques such as postural control, peripheral vestibular stimulation, visual illusions, virtual reality and somatosensory illusions to probe brain function.

Areas of expertise:

Visuo-vestibular interactions/Dizziness and Vertigo

Postural control (balance)

Motor control and learning

Eye movements

Human responses to vibration

Peripheral and central vestibular neurological conditions and movement disorders

Spatial orientation and disorientation

Postgraduate Project Opportunities
