Lynda is an Environmental Geographer. Lynda's research takes a critical physical geography approach combining insights from geomorphology, politcs of risk and disasters, and community-led responses around climate change and cultural heritage to promote socio-eco transformations and environmental justice. Lynda is a key voice in the geographies of education, an advocate of inclusion and accessibility in geosciences, and the use of virtual technologies to enhance learning. Her doctoral research was focused on northern England, and the River Tyne sequences that developed post-glacially. She is interested in Quaternary environmental change and fluvial histories, including geoarchaeology, relict glacial environments, and flood risk and hazards.
Lynda has held NERC-funded grants (PI and co-I) (CULTIVATE project More Inclusive Fieldwork ClicHer), and Shore to Shelter (Engaging the Public with Environmental Science). She has also been awarded funding from the British Council, the Learned Society of Wales, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Higher Education Academy.
She is the Degree Programme Director for the Geography programmes at Bangor. Lynda is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). She was the Chair of the RGS-IBG Geography and Education Research Group (GeogEd; 2021-2024).
Lynda has studied and worked in a number of UK Universities. She began her career at Northumbria University (BSc.), went on to Durham University (MSc.) and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Hull. She worked in industry prior to her undergraduate degree and following her Masters' degree. She worked as a Junior Research Associate in the early 2000s on a number of Aggregate Levy Funded projects. She was a post-doc at the University of Liverpool.
Media Expertise: Environmental Geography, Climate Change, & Natural Hazards
I am an Environmental Geographer specialising in the intersection of climate change, natural hazards, and community-led resilience. I am available for expert media commentary (print, broadcast, and digital) on:
- Climate Change & Adaptation: Navigating the social and environmental impacts of climate change, with a focus on community-led resilience.
- Natural Hazards & Risk: Understanding flood risks, river/coastal geomorphology, and environmental resilience in a multi-hazard world.
- Geological Context: Landscape evolution - including glacial/post-glacial histories - and its relevance to contemporary issues.
- Inclusive Geoscience: Advocating for more accessible, ethical, and inclusive approaches to fieldwork and environmental education.
With extensive experience in live and pre-recorded television and radio (including BBC and ITV), I am comfortable explaining complex environmental research for public audiences.
