- Deconstructing Sensitivity to Biofeedback: Individual Differences in Responsiv eness to Feedback,Interoception, and Biofeedback
While biofeedback interventions can improve health and performance outcomes for many, some individuals struggleto regulate target signals. The overarching objective of this work is to determine factors that can explain individualdifferences in biofeedback responsiveness. Using a multi-study design (N > 250), this project isolates biofeedbackmechanisms across three distinct phases. Study 1 examined personality traits and executive functions as moderatorsof responsiveness to “feedback” using a novel precision feedback task. Study 2 examined the same variables asmoderators of one’s ability to perceive heartbeats, to index the links between individual differences and theirinteroception (i.e., the “bio” part of biofeedback). Finally, Study 3 integrates these elements to shed light on the roleof personality and executive functions in the efficacy of a cardiac biofeedback protocol. Studies 1 and 3 also includedmanipulations of performance contingent incentives to evaluate any auxiliary impacts of motivation elicited by theoffer of rewards. Our initial experimental work demonstrates that performance-contingent incentives enhancebiofeedback responsiveness, and that responsiveness is also moderated by individual differences. For example, greater Openness to Experience and Emotional Stability were associated with greater responsiveness to theintervention. Preliminary findings suggest that biofeedback responsiveness is moderated by individual diff erences.By establishing a profile of the "responsive" individual—and revealing strategies that can enhance responsiveness(e.g., performance-linked incentives) — this research aims to guide practitioners in targeting and optimizing theefficacy of future biofeedback interventions.
