Modules:
Legal System of England and Wales
Introducing key features of the legal system of England and Wales, this module covers its principles and processes. You will learn about the different types and levels of court, including the jury system and the roles of judges, barristers, solicitors and court officials, as well as processes around civil and criminal cases. The module also explores how laws are made and the contributions of Parliament, judges' judgements and case law, and the impact of the European Union.
Management Studies
In this module, you'll receive a basic introduction to the study of business and management. You'll learn the different types of businesses and organisations, as well as how to finance a start-up. The module also illustrates different approaches to management and explains decision-making processes. It will give you an appreciation of the current business context and the challenges facing managers today.
Mathematics for Business and the Social Sciences
In this module, you will learn the maths skills expected of you at degree level. It covers essential mathematical language, notation, conventions and units, as well as developing your algebraic skills and introducing you to basic statistical concepts, topics and methods.
Media Studies (News Media)
You will be introduced to key concepts underpinning a range of media activities in this module. It considers the role and impact of the mass media in the UK - both print and digital - in the context of wider society, through a study of the news media. You will be introduced to textual criticism and theory. In terms of study skills, you will develop your critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities to become more effective as an independent learner.
Microeconomics
Providing a basic introduction to the study of Microeconomics, this module introduces relevant theories, concepts and terminology as well as explaining key topics such as demand and supply, the economic problem and the allocation of scarce resources. You will look at different models and the importance of economic decision-making, the effects of government intervention and theories around elasticity, specialisation, productivity, economies of scale, public goods, merit and demerit goods, and monopoly.

In addition, you will take two modules from the following. Please note: For a Law degree, one of the two must be Business Law; for a Media degree, one of the two must be Media Studies (Film and TV) and for a Psychology degree, one of the two must be Psychology.
Business Functions
A basic introduction to the study of business and management, this module introduces the function of marketing in different types of businesses and organisations. It considers issues around the liberalisation of trade and the development of the global market and how they have affected businesses and the emergence of the international manager. You will also look at basic human resource management functions and activities to gain an understanding of important issues surrounding people in the workplace.
Business Law
Providing you with a functional knowledge of the basic rights and liabilities in law affecting modern businesses, this module covers types of business entity, such as partnerships and companies. You will learn about the legal system in England and Wales, including the small claims track, and the rights and responsibilities of businesses in this legal framework. The module also outlines the formation and nature of a contract in law, and liability for non-fulfilment of a contract or negligence.
Macroeconomics
Familiarising you with the UK economy and government policy, this module also introduces key macroeconomic indicators, including GDP per capita, price indices and balance of payments. You'll learn about fiscal and monetary policy aims, the desire for growth and the relationship between policy and rates of inflation, deflation, and unemployment. National goals are viewed in the context of broader groupings such as the EU, and the impact of the development of a global market.
Media Studies (Film and TV)
This module aims to broaden your knowledge of critical and cultural theory in media. You will develop an understanding of the theoretical aspects of film and TV production, with an emphasis on story-telling. You will study and reflect on the processes involved in film and TV programme production, and consider the relationship between film, programme makers and their audiences.
Psychology
To introduce the main theoretical approaches to Psychology and consider its historical development as a field of study; to build awareness of key ideas and concepts; to focus on the areas of Social, Cognitive and Developmental Psychology; and to introduce Research methods and related ethical considerations.
