Assessment and the CAL:ON Literacy Hub

Work Package 3 focuses on assessment and digital innovation. Led by Bangor University, and in collaboration with Oxford Education & Assessment, this strand provides bilingual digital screening tools for key transition points, for example, school entry, Year 3, Year 7. Tools include LanguageScreen, ReadingScreen, Early Reading Screen, and the new ComprehensionScreen. These enable teachers to identify pupils at risk of reading or language difficulties and to track progress using reliable, curriculum-aligned data.

Projects within Work Package 3

LanguageScreen: A short digital assessment of vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language skills for early years, available in English and Welsh.
ReadingScreen: A short digital assessment of word and nonword reading accuracy and fluency for primary and early secondary pupils.
ComprehensionScreen: A short digital assessment of higher-level reading comprehension.

Sustainability 

Through this work we will provide a CAL:ON Literacy Hub; a national bilingual platform on Hwb providing access to resources, and collaborative networks linking schools, researchers, and local authorities. The hub will underpin sustainable, system-wide literacy improvement across Wales.
