This talk will explore the role of environmental geochemistry (availability of key nutrient minerals) in driving land use decisions in a population of wild elephants in South Africa, and how elephants chose foraging locations, plants and even plant parts to optimise intake of certain key nutrient minerals.
Lisa Yon is an Associate Professor in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine in the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham UK. She is a veterinarian with a PhD in elephant physiology (endocrinology of musth in Asian bull elephants). She has worked with and studied wildlife for over 30 years in Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. She is past Chair of the European Wildlife Disease Association, and is also a member of the IUCN Wildlife Health Specialist Group.
