Overview

This module introduces you to a range of perspectives in the translation profession. Through a combination of teaching styles, including practitioner-led workshops, you will explore aspects of applied translation including computer assisted tools, ethics and codes of professional conduct, translation project management, terminology management and industry-relevant professional skills. You will also be introduced to Interpreting as an adjacent field.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -C- - C+: Students should demonstrate a satisfactory comprehension of the topic studied, forming solid conclusions about the validity and uses of critical theory as a whole.

-good -B- - B+: Students receiving the higher grades of assessment will have analysed the sources provided, evaluating secondary material on set topics and assessing them as they form their own convincing conclusions.

-excellent -A- - A+: In order to achieve the highest grades, students will have supplemented the texts studied in class with additional primary and secondary reading, they will have analysed and evaluated existing readings of critical theory and come to their own innovative and thoughtful conclusions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will acquire a greater awareness of the concept of applied translation and its wide range of manifestations.

  • Students will acquire an overview of translation methodologies and computer-assisted translation tools.

  • Students will be able to analyse the uses and validity of a wide range of applied approaches to translation.

Description

Professional Translation Project Portfolio You will be given a simulated translation project for a customer. Without producing a translation of the ST, you will create a translation project logbook which will include: i. An example of written communication with your employer where you will seek to clarify the requirements, objectives and purposes of the client; the recipients of the translation service; and your own negotiation with the client to define deadlines, rates/invoicing, working conditions, access to information, contracts, rights, responsibilities and any ethical issue posed by the project. (20%) ii. An analysis of the source document, identifying potential textual and cognitive difficulties and assessing the strategies and resources needed for appropriate translation in line with the client’s brief and the communicative context (between 700-1000 words). (40%) iii. A report on the most relevant IT applications, including the full range of office software, search engines, corpus-based tools, text analysis tools, terminological databases and CAT tools that will assist you with delivering the translation project. (between 700-1000 words). (30%) iv. Your invoice to the client. (10%)

Description

A two-hour exam to be held during the exam period of semester 2. It comprises three questions out of which students must answer two. Question types include: a critical commentary on professional scenario; a critically reasoned translation exercise and a brief essay on an aspect of the translation profession.
