Principles of Physiotherapy Pr

Overall aims and purpose

The aim of the module is to enable students to develop an in depth knowledge and critical understanding of key areas of physiotherapy practice. Students will be encouraged to develop a deeper understanding of the impact of illness, injury, disability and ageing on patients/clients in line with key policy such as A Healthier Wales; a plan for health and social care (WG 2018) and the AHP UK Public Health Strategic Framework (PHE 2019 - 2024). Key skills such as communication, assessment and treatment will be considered and applied to a range of patients / clients across the lifespan. Students will be able to develop their knowledge of shared decision-making and putting the service user at the centre of goal-setting and treatment planning. Students will be able to demonstrate a wide range of diagnostic measures and their application in practice together with an understanding of the various treatment modalities used the context of a physiotherapy practice.

Course content

The module will include:

• Clinical examination and assessment of a range of musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions • Practical assessment, diagnosis and treatment techniques applicable to a wide range of of musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions • Communication skills • History taking and consultation skills (SOAP) • Shared decision making and goal setting • Compliance and adherance • Physiology of tissue repair • Clinical reasoning • Investigative measures including diagnostic ultrasound, radiology and MRI / CT scanning • Principles of strapping and taping • Introduction to massage and manual therapies - theory and practice
• Theory of electro-physical agents (electrotherapy) • Patient safety • Clinical risk management
• Risk management and communication • Review of therapeutic interventions

Assessment Criteria

C- to C+

50% Basic understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Basic understanding of physiotherapy practice. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of C- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.

60% Very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Good understanding of physiotherapy practice. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade B- in the Grading Criteria.

excellent

70%> Excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional evidence gained by the student. Very good understanding of physiotherapy practice. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade A- in the Grading Criteria

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the various modalities used in the treatment and management of injuries and conditions

  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of diagnostic measures and their application in practice

  3. Critically appraise communication skills within the context of the consultation in the practice setting.
