The course content includes - Local and national policies and guidelines in relation to medicines management Legal and ethical issues, including capacity, consent and record-keeping Legal requirements of various prescription formats such as PGDs, PSDs, remote prescribing and off-label prescribing The prescribing, dispensing, administering, storing and disposal of medications How to effectively use the British National Formulary to ensure patient safety Governance and incident reporting Medication administration errors and learning through reflection Adverse drug reactions, side effects and allergies Accountability and duty of candour Different classifications of medicines and implications for nursing practice Routes and preparations Polypharmacy Evaluating and monitoring the effect of medications

The course content includes - Basic principles of medicines management: Administration of Medicines & The Prescription Taking a patient's medication history Pharmacology: Introduction to pharmacology, pharmacokinetics I & II, Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), Drug Toxicity, Mental Health Drug pharmacology Local and National policies in relation to medicines management Legal requirements of various prescription formats such as Patient Group Directives (PGDs) and Patient Specific Directives (PSD's) Medicines management resources (How to effectively use the British National Formulary (BNF) in the promotion of safe and effective medicines management)/Evidence based resources Storage, transportation and disposal of medications Legal and ethical considerations surrounding medicines management Medication errors and human factors Shared decision making Allergies/anaphylaxis Record keeping/drug charts, including incident reporting

Assessment Strategy
