Overall aims and purpose
This module will introduce students to the diverse nature of physiotherapy practice and the learning style of the curriculum. The accelerated curriculum will expect a range of values and expectations from both staff and students which will be clarified for the students within this module. Students will be encouraged to integrate their learning with the core studies relating to the professional standards, competencies and expectations of a physiotherapist in contemporary practice. The module will be key in introducing the students to evidence based learning and seeks to promote autonomy, responsibility and independence all of which are key in ongoing professional development. This module will provide a sound underpinning knowledge relating to professional behaviours including the boundaries of accountability, autonomy and responsibility and will also encourage the student to start to consider and develop a professional identity. Issues such as service user / carer involvement will be built upon within the module and developed within the programme. This module will also have a key purpose of preparing the students for practice placements and will expect the student to explore the role of student physiotherapist while also providing the necessary mandatory training for clinical practice. Mandatory training in moving and handling (All Wales Passport), basic life support, infection control, de-escalation/breakaway and safeguarding children is provided in the School of Health Sciences prior to your first placement.
The module will include: • Learning styles and evidence based learning, • Reflective practice and professional thinking • Introduction to the profession and standards, competencies and expectations • Intoduction to health and social care policy • Health & Safety, Basic Life Support, infection control (mandatory training) • Scope of practice • Professional conduct and standards • Introduction to vulnerability and safeguarding • Maintaining the profession’s reputation and standing • Legal and ethical aspects of Physiotherapy • Consent and Informed Consent • Patient safety and duty of candour • Record-keeping and clinical notes • Accountability, autonomy and responsibility • The importance of inter-professional working (MDT) • Service user and carer involvment in Healthcare and well being • Communication and clinical effectiveness • Clinical reasoning • Problem-solving approach to patient management • Fitness to Practice • Introduction to keeping a portfolio workbook • Introduction and preparation for clinical placements • Mandatory training (see above).
60% Very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Good understanding of professional standards, competencies and expectations. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade B- in the Grading Criteria.
70%> Excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional evidence gained by the student. Very good understanding of professional standards, competencies and expectations. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade A- in the Grading Criteria
C- to C+
50% Basic understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Basic understanding of professional standards, competencies and expectations. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of C- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Keynote lectures including introduction of key resources Ground rules for EBL/ Learning as a group This will include practical sessions for mandatory training, BLS, Infection Control etc Preparation for placements etc 15 days
Enquiry based learning groups and group discussion boards including facilitating tutor 9 x 7 hour days
