The rules for international travel to Wales have changed to a single red list of countries and simplified travel measures for arrivals from the rest of the world (the Green and Amber list categories no longer apply).

The rules for travel from countries and territories not on the red list will depend on your vaccination status.

Exempt from these rules, students arriving from Albania, Armenia, Faroe Islands, Israel, Morocco, North Macedonia, Panama, Turkey, and Ukraine must have proof of a pre-departure negative Covid-19 test to travel to Wales, regardless of vaccination status. 

Arrivals from Non-Red list Countries:

If you are  'fully vaccinated':

Please check the Definition of fully-vaccinated to check if you qualify.  If you are fully vaccinated but do not fit into the criteria above then you must follow the rules for people travelling to Wales who are not fully vaccinated.

People arriving in Wales, from a country not on the red list, who are fully vaccinated must:

  • complete a Passenger Locator Form 
  • take a post arrival PCR test on day 2 (not required for children under 5)
  • self isolate until a negative result is received

If your PCR test is positive, you will be required to isolate for 10 days.

Should your address or contact details change whilst you are in Wales then you must update this as and when required by submitting a new passenger locator form (on GOV.UK).

You will need to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated before you travel.

Please note it is your responsibility to check the latest guidance before you travel to ensure that there have not been any changes.

If you are Not ‘Fully Vaccinated’:
People arriving in Wales who are not fully vaccinated and have not been in a red list country in the previous 10 days must:

Rules for Arriving from a Red List Country: 

When travelling to the UK from a red list country (or if you have passed through a red list country within 10 days of your arrival in the UK), you cannot travel directly to Wales and must enter through a designated port in England or Scotland.

Students arriving from countries on the red list are required to quarantine for a full 10 days on arrival in the UK at a designated UK port in a government-managed facility – a ‘covid hotel’ – starting from £2,285* per person. All UK entry points for arrivals from red-list countries are in England and Scotland, which means you will need to quarantine outside of Wales. Travellers are also required to book and pay for mandatory PCR tests on day 2 and day 8. All those who do not follow the rules for red-list countries face fixed notice penalties of £10,000.

*We will reimburse the £2,285 cost of quarantine to self-funding international students arriving from a red list country, who will be travelling to Bangor for the start of the 2021 academic year. For more details please refer to the FAQ listed below.

Travellers arriving from a red list country must:

From 4am Monday, 11 October 2021 UN staff and volunteers who have been fully vaccinated under the United Nations vaccine programme will also qualify as fully vaccinated. Click here for more information.

For the purposes of international travel you qualify as being fully vaccinated if you are vaccinated:

  • under an approved vaccination programme in the UK, Europe, USA or UK vaccine programme overseas
  • with a full course of the Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna or Janssen vaccines from a relevant public health body in Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahrain, Brunei, Canada, Dominica, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan or the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Formulations of the 4 listed vaccines, such as AstraZeneca Covishield, AstraZeneca Vaxzevria and Moderna Takeda, qualify as approved vaccines if administered in one of the countries or vaccination programmes listed above.

You must have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in Wales.

Where 2 doses of a vaccine are required for a full course, you are considered to be fully vaccinated where you have had:

  • 2 different types of vaccine, for example Oxford/AstraZeneca and Moderna
  •  2 vaccinations under 2 different approved programmes, for example Australia and Japan, UK and USA, EU and Canada

If you are arriving from a country that is not on the red list of countries and are fully vaccinated, you must follow the rules for people travelling to Wales who are fully vaccinated. If you are fully vaccinated then you won’t need to take a Covid-19 test before you travel.

If you are fully vaccinated but do not fit into the criteria above then you must follow the rules for people travelling to Wales who are not fully vaccinated. If you classed as not fully vaccinated then you will need to take a Covid-19 test before you travel.

Will I need to Self-Isolate on Arrival?

Will I need to Self-Isolate on Arrival?

If you are arriving from a NON Red List Country and are NOT fully Vaccinated then you will need to self-isolate for 10 days on your arrival in the UK.

The aim of the self-isolation policy is to keep the transmission rate in the UK as low as possible by helping prevent the re-introduction of the virus through travellers arriving from overseas.

The University has put in place a number of services to support you to ensure that you are safe and well looked after during your period of self-isolation. 

Please note that you can only isolate in university managed accommodation if you are travelling from a Non Red List Country. 

If travelling from a red level country then you would need to isolate in the government provided hotels.*

*The University will reimburse the £2,285 cost of quarantine in a government provided hotel to self-funding international students arriving from a red list country, who will be travelling to Bangor for the start of the 2021 academic year.

What do I need to do before I travel?

1.    Inform Bangor University of your arrival date and arrival time by emailing: internationalsupport@bangor.ac.uk .
2.    Inform your accommodation provider in the UK of your arrival date and arrival time.
3.    If you have not yet secured accommodation, ensure that you have temporary accommodation booked for your self-isolation period (see the Private Accommodation section below)
4.    Plan how you will travel from the airport to your accommodation. 
5.    Currently anybody arriving in the UK from overseas including International students must complete a passenger locator form online. You will need to provide details of your journey, your contact details and the address in the UK where you will be self-isolating. You can complete it up to 48 hours before you enter the UK. 
6.    Before travelling to England, Scotland, or Wales from abroad, including UK nationals returning home, you must provide evidence of a negative Covid-19 test result taken up to 3 days before departure. Click here for further guidance.

What do I need to bring with me when I travel?

You will need to bring:

  • click here for further information on the passenger locator form and here for further guidance regarding having a negative Covid-19 test result before travelling
  • a face mask and hand sanitiser in your hand luggage
  • an international credit or debit card and enough cash for use at the airport in case of emergencies – using cash on arrival should be avoided if possible
  • a copy of your CAS letter.

Self-isolating in University Managed Accommodation 

If you have pre-booked a room on campus (for the year, or a semester for Exchange/Study Abroad students) you will be able to self-isolate in that room for the 10-day period. 

It is very important that you inform the Halls office of your intended arrival date at: halls@bangor.ac.uk

During the 10 day isolation period, you should remain in your accommodation, not go outside or have visitors, and remain in your room as much as possible and keep use of the kitchen area to a minimum.

The Halls Office will support you by providing:

  • 3 meals per day 
  • a bedding pack
  • essential utensils
  • cleaning materials

You will also be contacted on a regular basis by Halls staff to check on your wellbeing. Should you test positive during day 2 or 8 of your isolation period, you must inform the Halls Office.

If you have not managed to secure accommodation before your arrival in the UK the University may have some short-term accommodation available for students and may also be able to provide a food service for students booking this short-term accommodation that need to self-isolate.  However, you will be required to pay for the room, starter pack* and the food, at a cost of £320 for the 10 day period. You should book this short-term accommodation before you arrive by emailing: halls@bangor.ac.uk

*Starter pack contents:
•    bed pack (duvet, pillows, bed linen) size dependent on room.
•    a toiletry tack (shampoo, shower gel, soap etc)
•    crockery pack (all crockery, cutlery and glass tumbler)
•    toilet roll 2 ply x2
•    towels x 2 
•    mini kettle.

Self-isolating in Private Accommodation 

If you have booked a place in Private Accommodation check what support your accommodation provider will be able to provide during your self-isolation period. 

You should also ensure that you inform both the University and your accommodation provider of your arrival date.

The University has been liaising with private accommodation providers to enquire about what support they can offer and to ensure that they understand the requirements around self-isolation.

Because you will need somewhere safe and comfortable to self-isolate on arrival and you need to provide your address in the UK on the passenger locator formit’s essential to arrange at least temporary accommodation before your arrival in the UK.

If you have not managed to secure accommodation before your arrival in the UK the University may have some short-term accommodation available for students and may also be able to provide a food service for students booking this short-term accommodation that need to self-isolate.  However, you will be required to pay for the room, starter pack* and the food, at a cost of £438 for the 10 day period. You should book this short-term accommodation before you arrive by emailing: halls@bangor.ac.uk

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide accommodation for couples and families in University managed accommodation. If you are coming with your family please contact our Private Housing Office for advice: studenthousing@bangor.ac.uk

Please note that quarantine reimbursements are only applicable to those travelling from red list countries, who must isolate in government-managed quarantine hotels.

If you book University accommodation, you will most likely be living in a shared building with other students, so you will have the opportunity to meet fellow students and make friends. We will ensure that you are briefed on government regulations for social distancing in force at the time, so you and your friends can live together safely. Please note, university will keep your safety and fellow students safety as our top priority, so may impose required restrictions from time to time. 

GENERAL CONCERNS ABOUT COVID-19 FAQs

(Social, Safety, Discrimination, and Healthcare)

International students in the UK will be able to access the Covid-19 vaccine, however, priority is given to healthcare workers, the elderly and individuals with health conditions, older international students or those with underlying medical conditions will fall into priority categories, in the same way as the domestic population.

The University will inform all students of arrangements as soon as details are available. In order to get access to the vaccine and to receive healthcare in the UK, international students should register with a General Practitioner (GP/local Doctor).
 
If you are already a Bangor University student, but have not yet registered with a Doctor
Students from the EU are entitled to free medical services in the UK if you have applied for the EU Settlement scheme and been given settled or pre-settled status.

International students (including those from the EU who have to apply for a Student Visa) would have had to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of the visa process - making this payment entitles you, also, to free medical attention.
 
However, to receive treatment or medication, you will have to register with a Doctor at a local Medical Centre/Surgery. It is very important that you have registered and we recommend the Bodnant Medical Centre, near our Ffriddoedd Campus: https://bodnantmedicalcentre.co.uk/

During this difficult period, the International Student Support Office, Student Services and your School will provide support for your academic studies and any non-academic issues you may have. This will mainly be done online, by telephone, skype and email. Depending on the situation and rules in place for social distancing, some face-to-face support may also be available.
