Bangor University has achieved a prestigious Fairtrade University and College Award for 2025.
The 2* Award is for the University’s continued commitment to championing ethical consumption and global justice across its campuses.
It recognises sustained commitment over two academic years to increasing awareness and action on trade justice and globalisation during a period that continues to challenge institutions due to shifting educational landscapes and growing global crises.
The Award is given in partnership by the Fairtrade Foundation and Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS-UK). This is to encourage collaboration between students, staff, and students’ unions. The programme supports institutions in equipping students with the understanding and tools to drive positive global change.
Angela Church, Head of Venues Hospitality and Catering at Bangor University said, “Achieving 2* is a great achievement. It recognises the great work of the ‘Go Fairtrade’ student project and the regular Campus Life Fair Trade events for students. I wish to thank everyone on the Fairtrade steering group for their commitment to this award.”
Sarah Brazier, Head of Campaigns at the Fairtrade Foundation said, “After celebrating 30 years of Fairtrade in the UK last year, Universities play a vital role in the Fairtrade movement. The passion and energy of students are central to creating a fairer world. Sales of Fairtrade products on campuses, speaking up for farmers and workers across the globe, and student-led initiatives have all contributed to change.
“As we approach the end of the 2025 academic year, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you and congratulations to all of you – the university staff and students who have gone above and beyond in their support of the Fairtrade movement through your award submissions. Your commitment and creativity continue to drive change. Together, we can continue to grow a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone”.
Universities were assessed across a wide range of areas, including Research and Curriculum, Campaigning and Influencing, and Procurement, Retail and Catering.
Additional points were awarded for innovative and impactful approaches to engaging students and staff with global sustainability and ethical trade.
