Bangor students win national awards!

One of Bangor Students’ Union’s societies and one of its Sabbatical Officers won awards recently at the Nightline Association awards nights.

Bangor Nightline came to the top of the category for the “Best Fundraising Event”, beating off a number of strong competitors with the Masquerade Ball they held in conjunction with Psych Society.

The event, which attracted over 400 masked dancers to PJ Hall in December, raised in excess of £1,000 to help continue to offer a fantastic listening and information service to all of Bangor University’s students.

Shôn Prebble, VP Education & Welfare, said:

“It was great to see our Nightline volunteers getting recognised for all of the hard work and effort that went into the ball. Nightliners are all anonymous, so it’s nice to see them being acknowledged for the countless hours that they give up to support other students here at the University. The competition was tough, but the sheer reach that this event had in both publicising and fundraising for Nightline was a massive success.”

In addition to Nightline’s award, Shôn was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement” award by the Association. Shôn began his involvement with Nightline as a first year in 2008 and since 2009 has been the volunteer in charge of the Good Practice Guideline accreditation project, assessing and accrediting Nightlines across the UK and Ireland.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time with Bangor Nightline and the Nightline Association” he said. “The work that Nightlines do, both in Bangor and across the UK & Ireland is often overlooked and undervalued. The Good Practice Guidelines really do highlight the amazing professionalism with which students run Nightline. Bangor Nightline was the first in the country to gain accreditation back in 2010, and since then, the project has gone from strength to strength. I’m really going to miss working with them, but I wish Bangor Nightline, the Nightline Association and all the other Nightlines, both here and in Europe, the very best for the future.”
