Bangor University wins hat-trick at National Student Housing Awards

Representing the team work responsible for the success were: James Gibney, Yvonne Williams, Einir Young, Prof Carol Tully, Deirdre McIntyre, Gwen Holland, Ann Thomas and Mike Roe. Representing the team work responsible for the success were: James Gibney, Yvonne Williams, Dr Einir Young, Prof Carol Tully, Deirdre McIntyre, Gwen Holland, Ann Thomas and Mike Roe.Recycling and internet facilities put Bangor University in the lead in National Student Housing Awards.

Bangor University has won awards for both the Best Environmental Management and the Best Students Internet in the National Student Housing Survey Awards.

The Awards are solely based on student feedback from tens of thousands of UK students to the survey compiled by Red Brick Research.

Commenting on the success, Deirdre McIntyre, Head of Residential Life explained that the University’s services to students was provided by a seam-less team effort to create an all-round supportive environment for students living and studying at Bangor University.

“The responses to the surveys provide us with really useful information on which to continuously extend and build on our services to students,” she added.

Winning the award for Best Environmental Management is testimony Bangor University’s commitment to the environment and to the dedication and inspired thinking of the Residential Life Team and the Sustainability LAB Team who deliver a range of waste and recycling activities. The University’s Halls of Residences offer all students a fully comprehensive recycling facility with the means to recycle waste in both their individual halls and in communal areas. An infographic poster, displayed in all of the bedrooms, clearly demonstrates what is acceptable in the recycling facilities.

Along with other waste awareness campaigns, the University’s Sustainability Team endeavours to inspire students to become responsible global citizens, through a number of initiatives and events throughout the academic year.

Bangor University is delighted to have been awarded the Best Student Broadband Award. A reliable fast connection to the Internet is an essential aspect of student life. The University has invested over £300K in the last two years to upgrade the WIFI capacity in the student villages and in all students areas across campus. Additionally the University has just completed a project to double the University’s connection speed, resulting in excellent connection speeds to the end user. The service is provided in all our study bedrooms by a close partnership between the University’s IT Services and the Student Accommodation team.

A small dedicated team of IT Support professionals assist students with any issues they have in connecting their devices, while a welcome weekend “hot squad” is at hand as students collect their keys to ensure they are online from day one. The University continues to invest in this service and general IT provision to ensure our students and staff are able to enjoy the best service.

The University was also awarded an International Accommodation Quality Mark. This  Quality Mark is awarded to any accommodation provider achieving 90% satisfaction or above with international students.

Bangor was one of five university providers to win the recognition.

The University was also among the three finalists for the Best University Halls category.

Bangor University was also recently ranked in the top 10 of the UK’s non-specialist Universities, according to the latest annual National Student Survey (NSS).

The University was also awarded a Gold Standard in the first round of the UK Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework and consistently performs well, based on student responses in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards.

The annual National Student Housing Awards are based exclusively on direct feedback from over 32,000 students across 200 universities and colleges. With no written nominations and no ‘expert’ judges, the National Student Housing Awards are uniquely credible and highly prized. Data for the awards are collected through the National Student Housing Survey (UK) and the National Student Housing Survey (Ireland) which is managed by Red Brick Research, an independent market research and business intelligence agency with a specialist focus on youth marketing, student accommodation and higher education.
