History Student Partakes in Prestigious Westminster Work Placement

Bangor History student Sean Collier recently completed a parliamentary work placement at Westminster. This work placement formed part of Sean’s 2nd year studying for a BA in Modern and Contemporary History, and here he share’s some of his experiences of his time.

‘My placement at Westminster was an incredible experience. Some highlights included being given a tour of the Houses of Parliament and sitting in on Prime Minister’s Questions. It was amazing to be in Parliament while events such as the European Elections, Theresa May’s resignation and the ensuing Conservative leadership campaign unfolded.

My main tasks revolved around research, such as collecting information on issues such as the Restoration and Renewal Bill and the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in order to create briefings for the party’s MPs. Along with this, I also had the opportunity to write a motion to conference for Plaid Cymru and wrote an Early Day Motion which was tabled in the House of Commons!’

Sean also gained valuable insights into Parliamentary processes, including: daily events in the House of Commons; the role of the House of Lords (and how Lords are selected); and how a bill becomes an act. He goes on, ‘As I was in Parliament in the few days leading up to the European Elections, I was able to learn more about how a party markets itself, such as utilising social media to secure attention and votes. The placement was made especially enjoyable due to the friendly Plaid Cymru team, who were very helpful in educating me as to how a party works. Anyone with any interest in politics should jump at this opportunity, it is a fantastic, rare chance to get hands-on experience in Parliament.’
