‘One-stop-shop’ for Welsh in the University

Vice-Chancellor Prof John G. Hughes and Dr Llion Jones look at the new website resourceToday (Wednesday 8 June), Bangor University is launching Cymorth Cymraeg a new resource on the University’s website that will help staff and students to use Welsh.

Cymorth Cymraeg is a ‘one-stop-shop’ for Welsh on the University’s website. Two main sections provide resources for both spoken and written Welsh, including templates for e-mail messages and sound files to help pronounce Welsh.  The new web-pages will offer practical support to staff and give them confidence to use the language at work. The site will be / was officially launched by Bangor University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hughes.

Commenting on Cymorth Cymraeg’s significance, Professor Hughes said: ‘I warmly welcome this development. Bangor University is an organisation that values Welsh language skills and that encourages staff and students to develop and maintain those skills. My colleagues’ Welsh language abilities are key in enabling the University to operate bilingually and Cymorth Cymraeg will be an invaluable resource for them in their day to day work. On a personal level, as I learn Welsh and make increasing use of the language at work, I will certainly turn to the website for guidance and assistance’.

Dr Llion Jones, Director of Canolfan Bedwyr commented that: ‘Given the strong emphasis in the Welsh Assembly Government’s Welsh language strategy on promoting the use of Welsh, we hope that this exciting development offers a practical contribution towards realising this aim at Bangor University, and that the site also offers a possible model for other organisations.’
