Student competes for Bryn Terfel Scholarship

A Welsh student at Bangor University is competing for the Bryn Terfel Scholarship this year.

Second year student Dion Lloyd Davies, 19, from Castell Newydd Emlyn, will take part in the competition, which will be broadcast live on S4C, on Sunday October 6th. There will also be an introductory half hour programme on S4C at 9.30pm on Wednesday, October 2nd.

Dion, a former Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Teifi pupil, said: “It is an amazing experience and I feel very priveledfed to be a part of this competition. Everyoe has been very supportive and I’m very grateful.”

The Bryn Terfel Scholarship is worth £4,000 to the winner of one of the Urdd Eisteddfod's under 25 solo competitions.

Each of the eight solo winners are invited to compete for the Scholarship during a special evening following the Eisteddfod. The competitors are asked to produce a 12 minute programme to perform in front of distinguished guest judges who will decide the eventual winner of the Scholarship.

The main aim of the Scholarship is to nurture the talents of Wales's best up and coming talent and give them the opportunity to develop within their field. Before the Scholarship the eight competitors receive a Master Class by an expert who offers advice on how to improve their performances and gain some extra marks.

In the past, Bangor PhD student Manon Wyn Williams and music student Huw Ynyr Evans have won the prestigious scholarship, in 2007 and 2012 respectively.
