Student Led Teaching Awards 2017

Dr Graham Bird: SLTA Teacher of the Year 2017Dr Graham Bird: SLTA Teacher of the Year 2017The sixth annual Student Led Teaching Awards ceremony was held recently and celebrated the high standard of teaching and pastoral support in Bangor University.

Nominations have significantly increased over the last few years, which shows that more and more students are recognising the importance of the quality of teaching on their education.

Of the 900 nominations, academics and non-academics were nominated for their hard work in the University over the 13 categories. This year there was an extra award for the School of the Year, which was awarded to the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography (SENRGy).

Delighted with the award, Professor Morag McDonald, Head of School, said:

“It was a fantastic night for SENRGy and great to see our staff and students being nominated for awards. Winning the School of the Year Award is further evidence of the great atmosphere within the School, the hard work of staff and students and the constructive relationship SENRGy has with its students."

The School also saw one of its staff scoop the Teacher of the Year Award - Dr Graham Bird, Senior Lecturer.

Dr Bird said: “It's a great honour to be nominated for the award, let alone win it. A huge thanks to the students who took the time to send in the nomination."

An excerpt from one of the nominations for Dr Bird noted that “Graham is extremely involved in the School from the Open Days where he addresses all involved, led our international fieldtrip to Tenerife which was incredibly well done, peer guiding schemes and has always been available for 1-to-1 meetings regarding assignments.”

Professor Carol Tully, Pro Vice Chancellor (Students) said: “The SLTAs are now firmly established in the University calendar and this year’s event has been a great success. Once again, the nominations were incredibly inspiring and it was marvellous to see so many staff recognised for their sterling work. These Awards are a wonderful opportunity to emphasise the great work done by staff across the University and learn how individuals have positively impacted upon our students’ educational experience.”

Helen Marchant, VP Education and Welfare in the Students’ Union, and one of the organisers of the evening said: “The SLTAs are a fantastic experience to be a part of. The Awards celebrate the partnership that staff and students have and it should be something that every University should strive for.”

Congratulations to all the 2017 winners:
