Overview

Ian Roberts is a Lecturer in Sustainable and Ethical Banking at Bangor Business School. Drawing on over 27 years of professional experience in finance, strategy, and leadership, Ian teaches across undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive programmes, with a focus on Financial Crime, Credit & Lending, Financial Ethics & Regulation, and Personal Finance.

Leadership

Ian provides academic leadership as Module Director for multiple Chartered Banker MBA and MSc Banking and Finance modules, including Financial Crime and Credit & Lending. He serves as Leader for the CFA University Affiliation Programme, supporting undergraduate students pursuing professional pathways in investment and finance.

Ian also acts as Transnational Education (TNE) Link Tutor, chairing boards and ensuring quality and consistency across Bangor’s strategic partnerships in China and other regions. He is an active member of the Bangor Business School Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team, contributing to equality, diversity and inclusion goals, and plays a leadership role in the LGBTQ+ staff network.

Contributions to the Business School and University

Ian contributes significantly to Bangor’s global reach through his moderation of TNE partners and development of new content for online and collaborative delivery. He has enhanced existing modules with innovative pedagogy and regularly supports colleagues in embedding ethical and sustainable banking practices in the curriculum. He is also a trained External Examiner, demonstrating commitment to maintaining academic standards across programmes.

Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Ian’s dedication to teaching excellence is recognised by a nomination for the 2024 Education and Student Experience Award. He leads modules that blend academic rigour with professional insight, empowering students to critically engage with financial systems, ethics, and sustainability. He supports Chartered Banker MBA students, international cohorts, and undergraduates alike with a commitment to student success and employability.

Innovation and Technology Enhanced Education

A strong advocate for AI literacy in higher education, Ian has integrated AI tools into his modules and presented nationally on the responsible use of AI in assessments. His webinar “AI in Higher Education: What Happened When I Made It Mandatory in Assessments” (University of Kent Digitally Enhanced Education Webinar) shares insights on embedding generative AI to develop students’ skills. He has also published a custom GPT for educators to help build AI capability across the sector.

Ian is proficient in a wide range of learning technologies, including Blackboard, WISEflow, Turnitin, Teams, Collaborate, Panopto, and digital engagement tools such as Mentimeter and Padlet.

Research and Impact

Ian’s research explores the social psychology and organisational behaviour driving misconduct in UK financial firms. His work aims to advance ethical banking practice through deeper understanding of regulatory breaches and their antecedents. He has presented his research at academic conferences and acts as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance.
