Overview
Nia graduated from Bangor University with a BSc in Psychology in 2003. Having worked for a community project and established her own business over the next 4 years, Nia returned to Bangor University in 2007 to complete an MSc in Psychological Research before going on to complete her PhD in 2012.
Nia is part funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and delivers lectures in both Welsh and English in the School of Psychology. The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol aims to increase and develop the Welsh-medium provision in Higher Education across all Welsh Universities. Nia is a Teaching Fellow of the HEA and won Welsh-medium educator of the year in the 2017 Student Led Teaching Awards.
Teaching Interests
Nia is Module Organiser and Lecturer on several of the Welsh-medium undergraduate modules, delivering both formal lectures and small group/practical sessions through the medium of Welsh and bilingually. Nia teaches research methods and statistics in the second year and a specialist third year module looking at early development, adversity during childhood and the crucial role played by parents and caregivers in child development and wellbeing. Nia supervises both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students during their research project.
Research Interests
Nia’s research interests are early intervention and particularly the implementation of interventions with high-risk and vulnerable members of the community in Wales. Ongoing research involves the validation of a welsh-version of a social problem solving task for young children; evaluating an online parenting programme in collaboration with CEBEI and looking at the impact of early adversity on the later functioning and well-being of young adults. New research projects for the next academic year will include the impact of technology on parenting, and parental sharing on the internet, also known as ‘sharenting’.
Administrative Duties
Nia holds several administrative posts in the School of Psychology including Senior Tutor, Disabilities Tutor and Chair of the Research Methods and Skills Group. These roles involve active engagement with recruitment, ensuring that student welfare is a priority as well as redeveloping curriculum.
