Graduate Entry Medicine

In 2019, the four-year Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) course started at the School of Medical Sciences at Bangor University. Working in collaboration with Cardiff School of Medicine this GEM course is delivered entirely in North Wales. You’ll benefit from the existing strengths in Cardiff and Bangor Universities, which include medical education, health practitioner education, community engagement, and Welsh medium provision.  

Building on the excellence of Cardiff University’s established C21 medical curriculum, your study will be guided by evidence-based approaches from other centres of excellence around the world. You will experience a rich learning environment with greater emphasis on learning in Primary Care and at the heart of local communities, in keeping with the Welsh Government’s plan “A Healthier Wales”. 

You’ll follow the same curriculum as students based in Cardiff but with a greater focus on community medicine through a range of clinical placements in varied environments including:  

• a full year at a GP Surgery  
• large teaching hospitals 
• mountain medicine  
• rural environments 

We’ll train you to be an excellent doctor for Wales and beyond by providing high quality teaching, and an inspiring learning experience based around increased clinical contact and award-winning clinical teaching at the University Health Board. You’ll graduate as a skilled clinician who understands people and the environment in which we live.
