Archive of the month

During 2019 we will be celebrating a “Year of Discovery” which will be an opportunity to :

  • look at inventive individuals who have carried out pioneering work in the fields of aeronautics, archaeology, mathematics, Celtic studies etc.
  • find out about adventurous Welsh men and women who have travelled the world as settlers or missionaries
  • discover more about new and exciting resources for researchers in the Archives and Special Collections

The “Year of Discovery” will enable us to build a multi-layered view of our collections  -  presenting our strengths and what makes us distinctive from other institutions throughout Wales.

Isaiah Brookes Jones and an extract from his journal, 28 September 1905, with a small sketch
of an iceberg near Labrador, North America (Bangor Ms 18343)

Isaiah Brookes Jones (1884-1907)

Isaiah Brookes Jones was born in Llanfair Talhaearn, Denbighshire and moved with his mother to Colwyn Bay at a very young age following the death of his father. The religious revival of 1904 was the stimulus behind his decision to become a missionary.

He began his work as a missionary amongst the native people in Lenore in the province of Manitoba, Canada and in October 1907, he moved to Winnipeg to study for a degree in Divinity at Wesley College. He joined the Y.M.C.A. in November of that year so that he could learn to swim in their swimming pool since his missionary work would require him to travel lake Winnipeg by canoe. Tragically, on 28 November 1907, Isaiah Brookes Jones was found drowned in the Y.M.C.A. swimming pool. He was 23 years of age.

The collection includes his detailed and light-hearted journals of his voyage from Liverpool to Canada and life as a missionary amongst the Cree with entries dating between 1905 – 1907. Also included are letters and newspaper cuttings.

His papers reveal him to be a well-educated individual with an open mind and an eagerness to expose himself to new experiences - to explore, discover and learn about different cultures.
