Overall aims and purpose

To provide an integrated analysis of management, organisations and people, developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts, drawing on key issues arising from contemporary research in organisational behaviour (OB) and human resource management (HRM).

Course content

Theories and models of management: classical and contemporary perspectives; Individual differences: personality, perception, values, learning, motivation; Groups and teams in the organisation; Managing relationships: communication, decision-making, power, control and conflict resolution; Developing managers, people developers; Leadership: classical and critical perspectives; Organisation design: classic and contemporary structures, job design; Organisation cultures: values, ethics, norms of behaviour; Organisation processes: learning, change, growth and development.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically evaluate management and organisational theory and practice.

  2. Critically assess the management processes involved in managing in an increasingly complex, global, changing environment.

  3. Critically reflect and relate theories of management to personal experiences (of being an employee, manager, working in a group etc)
