Module - Semester 1
This module draws upon insights from organisational behaviour (OB)and Human Resource Management (HRM) to develop knowledge, insights and skills relevant to the management of people in organisations. By bringing together these two fields the module provides evidenced based insight that is crucial for understanding and managing employees, and improving management and leadership practice. Insight from this module also helps support some of the complex challenges of the socio-cultural aspects of the organisation including (but not limited to) individual motivation, group behaviour and cultural change.
• Theories and models of managing people and understanding employee behaviour; • Understanding how managing people (HRM) fits with Corporate Strategy & Organisational Performance • Line Management, Leadership & People Management • Employee Resourcing & Work/ Job Design • Managing Performance and People Development for Organisational Performance • Employee Relations & Reward inc communications and employee voice • Understanding employee motivation, perception employee engagement & psychological contract • Understanding Teams at work including group development theory, team roles and problems with teamwork. • Explore strategic influencers of managing people including organisational culture & managing change, employee wellbeing and traditional versus contemporary leadership. • Explore contemporary people management issues including employee well-being, diversity & leading a virtual organisation.
Threshold: C- to C+ (50-59%): Satisfactory performance. No major omissions or inaccuracies in the deployment of information/skills. Some grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Integration of theory/practice/information present intermittently in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Knowledge of key areas/principles only. Weaknesses in understanding of some areas. Limited evidence of background study. Answer inadequately focused on task and with some irrelevant material and poor structure. Arguments presented but lack coherence. Minor factual/computational errors. Lacking original interpretation.
Merit: B- to B+ (60-69%): Good performance. Most of the relevant information accurately deployed. Good grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practical elements. Good integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills. Understands most but not all concepts/issues. Evidence of background study. Focused answer with good structure. Arguments presented coherently. Mostly free of factual errors. Some limited original interpretation. Well known links between topics are described. Problems addressed by existing methods/approaches. Good presentation with accurate communication
Distinction: A- and above (70) and above: An outstanding performance, exceptionally able. The relevant information accurately deployed. Excellent grasp of theoretical/conceptual/practice elements. Excellent integration of theory/practice/information in pursuit of the assessed work's objectives. Strong evidence of the use of creative and reflective skills.
- Appreciate the strategic, change and leadership elements of OB and HRM
- Critically assess the human resource management and organisational behaviour processes involved in managing in an increasingly complex, global, changing environment.
- Critically evaluate key human resource management and organisational theory and practice.
- Critically reflect and relate theories of human resource management and organisational behaviour to personal experiences (of being an employee, manager, working in a group etc)
- Understand the individual & group/ team complexities inherent within organisational behaviour and human resource management
