Overview

Students will work with a variety of texts. They will create reading frames to aid analysis of these texts. Students will also utilise the Academic Word List to further their interpretation of texts.

This course is suitable for Non-native speakers of English with an IELTS of less than 7.0

Assessment Strategy

Pass (C) - A passable range of lexical knowledge is evidenced, in both comprehension and production, but shows limited skill and awareness of appropriacy in such areas as register, collocation, and grammatical form. Reading ability displays basic skill and there is limited appreciation of various types of text. There is little evidence of analysis, and only limited awareness of the deeper or broader meaning of the text. Any use of the source text in paraphrase and/or summary shows weakness or irrelevancy in terms of focus, selection, structure and/or formatting, and demonstrates a lack of awareness of academic integrity. The work is not carefully presented and may contain communication errors.

Good (B) - A range of lexical knowledge and skill is evidenced, in both comprehension and production, and shows awareness of appropriacy in such areas as register, collocation, and grammatical form. Reading ability displays sound skill and there is understanding of various types of text, but with some limitations. There is evidence of analysis, and some awareness of the linguistic features that may reveal the author's stance or implied meaning. Any use of the source text in paraphrase and/or summary is appropriately focused, selected, structured and formatted, and demonstrates an awareness of academic integrity, but with some weaknesses. The work is carefully presented with few communication errors.

Excellent (A) - A wide range of lexical knowledge and skill is evidenced, in both comprehension and production, and shows appropriacy in such areas as register, collocation, and grammatical form. Reading ability displays comprehensive skill evidenced in detailed understanding of different types of text, including a grasp of any subtlety of author's stance or meaning, reflecting extensive analysis. Any use of the source text in paraphrase and/or summary is highly focused, logically selected, well-structured and formatted, and demonstrates good academic integrity. The work is presented to a high standard with accurate communication.
