Overview
The course content will include all the “knowledge” section of the BAPM (2012) document “Matching knowledge and skills for Qualified In Speciality (QIS) Neonatal nurses: A core syllabus for clinical competency” (document attached) as follows: Management of the normal newborn or convalescing infant, anatomy and physiology (structure, function and process): Fluid, electrolyte, nutrition and elimination. Respiratory and cardiovascular management. Neurological, pain & stress management. Thermoregulation, skin, hygiene and infection prevention Managing and supporting the family. Study skills. Use of relevant IT systems.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyse and demonstrate the clinical skills and knowledge required by the neonatal nurse in the neonatal nursing environment.
- Critically analyse ethical issues in relation to neonatal care
- Critically analyse the psychosocial needs of the parents, extended family and colleagues when a very sick baby is being nursed in the neonatal intensive care unit.
- Critically evaluate and provide safe, effective care to babies and their
families/carers within the neonatal nursing environment
- Critically evaluate, and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, the safety precautions necessary in a neonatal intensive care unit specifically related to equipment, the dangers inherent in a high technology area and the necessary supervision needed with staff usage.
