Climate change has been recognised as one of the biggest threats to global health in the 21st century, and as a result, Public Health Wales has made tackling the public health effects of climate change a priority in its Long Term Strategy from 2023 – 2035. This talk presents findings from research by Public Health Wales and Bangor University on the health impacts of climate change in Wales. It draws on findings from a national Health Impact Assessment, outlining the projected effects of a warming climate on population health, and the unequal burden on vulnerable groups. It also incorporates results from a Welsh public survey, exploring how people in Wales understand climate related health risks, the personal actions they are willing to take, and the level of support for policies designed to reduce or limit climate change. Together, this evidence base aims to inform and strengthen the adoption of policies and plans that can protect and promote health and wellbeing in Wales as the climate continues to change.
