The origin of Welsh drama and the tradition of adapting literary works for the stage
The Welsh drama is a very young medium compared to other forms of Welsh literature. The interludes of the eighteenth century offered some form of theatrical activity to the Welsh people of the time, but that tradition was brought to an end by the Methodist Revival. The foundations of what we know today as the Welsh drama movement, which is quite different from the interludes, were not seen until the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper will trace the origins of the Welsh drama and highlight the valuable contribution of adaptations of literary texts in that regard, and in particular adaptations of the works of the father of the Welsh novel, Daniel Owen.
